Co-Mentality of silk

Co-creation and Collaboration is part of who we are

In MANTILITY we strongly believe in shared value. The core of our business model includes unleashing the creative potential of diverse artists in a unique shared silk gallery. But the main principle of co-creation, harnessing the collective potential of groups is not only limited to our designers. It also extents to fellow creative people, friends, groups and businesses that share similar values, aesthetics and stories.

woMANTILITY Project

Women of the world want and deserve an equal future free from stigma, stereotypes and violence; a future that’s sustainable, peaceful, with equal rights and opportunities for all. To get us there, the world needs women at every table where decisions are being made.

The Project woMANTILITY is a community of women, professionals and burgeoning talents that inspire, teach, share and network. The MANTILITY team promotes, celebrates and collaborates with institutions, individuals and companies to support and elevate personal stories and/or brand goals that relate to gender equality.

The first woMANTILITY action is dedicated to the support of Women’s Advisory Center of the Municipality of Kavala. On the occasion of the International Women’s Day (March 8th), MANTILITY and Tsiakiris Silk House, with the help of their partners, implement an action for supporting the Center’s aims.

Specifically, as part of the woMANTILITY project, a new silk scarf is designed and produced, dedicated to “the half of the world”. The scarf is entitled “She Man”, referring to the homonymous poem by the poet Zoe Karelli, is made of 100% silk from Soufli, its dimensions are 70x70cm and its price is 100 euros. All proceeds from the first fifteen (15) silk scarves will be donated to the needs of the support and awareness actions implemented by the Women’s Advisory Center of the Municipality of Kavala.

Unfortunately, the poem is available only in Greek:

Η άνθρωπος – Ζωή Καρέλλη
Εγώ γυναίκα, η άνθρωπος,
ζητούσα το πρόσωπό Σου πάντοτε,
ήταν ως τώρα του ανδρός
και δεν μπορώ αλλιώς να το γνωρίσω.
Ποιος είναι και πώς
πιο πολύ μονάχος,
παράφορα, απελπισμένα μονάχος,
τώρα, εγώ ή εκείνος;
Πίστεψα πως υπάρχω, θα υπάρχω,
όμως πότε υπήρχα δίχως του
και τώρα,
πώς στέκομαι, σε ποιο φως,
ποιος είναι ο δικός μου ακόμα καϋμός;

Lyrics on Silk

Did you know that two of our MANTILITY artworks are dedicated to poetry and inspired by renowned Greek Poets?

The first one is called “If you hadn’t given me poetry, O Lord” and it’s a painting by Leonidas Michalako, inspired by the homonymous poem by Nikiforos Vrettakos.

MANTILITY Times 7 poetryMANTILITY Silk Scarf: “If you hadn’t given me poetry, O Lord”” by Leonidas Michalakos

Hereby the concept as “narrated” by the painter himself:

What fascinates me most is how speech,

written or oral, literary or folk can become an occasion

for the creation of an artwork.

With egg tempera, inks, gold and silver leaves,

paint brushes and dip pens, and with predominant tool

the so-called “minuscule cursive” script,

the Greek handwriting of the Byzantine times,

I attempt to capture on the parchment

the rhythm of the words,

the color of the speech.

The source of inspiration for this particular scarf is the poem

“If you hadn’t given me poetry, O Lord”

by the great Laconian poet Nikiforos Vrettakos,

whose poetic speech moves me deeply and floods me

with images, forms and shapes.

The other one is called “Aegean” and is designed by Michalis Toumanidis. Inspired by the Greek sea, sunlight and poetry, Toumanidis combined all these and visualized a love poem by Odysseas Elytis called “Of the Aegean I”:

Eros
The archipelago
And the prow of its foams
And the gull of its dreams
On its highest mast the sailor waves
A song
Eros
Its song
And the horizons of its voyage
And the echo of its nostalgia
On her wettest rock the betrothed awaits
A ship
Eros
Its ship
And the nonchalance of its summer winds
And the jib of its hope
On its highest undulation an island cradles
The coming
Odysseas Elytis

There is also one more MANTILITY Scarf related to poetry and literature, and it’s “Planet Freaks”. The Designer [Anonymous] creates a fantastic universe and presents a series of imaginary planets. Beautiful and delicately drawn illustrations that create a delightful play of silk and volume. The designer invites you to become one of the species that live on this planet. Each planet intends to convey ideas and emotions associated with the influence of the planets on the psyche.

Planet “FREAKS” is the holiday home for many residents of the known universe.

Beatniks, jazzniks, crazy, underground, anti-conformists, ragged and many others.

The governor of the city is called Jack Kerouac.

G Design Studio

G Design Studio, the creative agency that curated MANTILITY branding and designed The Scarf “I Like You“, has designed this beautiful campaign for the Athens State Orchestra. “This year’s concert campaign for the @athensstateorchestra is a union between illustrations that highlight our values and ideals, and the transformation of the historic Bodoni typeface that with the creative force of type designer George Triantafyllakos is imbued with rhythm and musicality, becoming the ‘Bodoni Heroic’. The custom ligatures of the typeface further showcase the combination of type and sound while the bold style used in the illustrations and the vivid colour palette create a juxtaposition of modern and classic. An evergreen celebration of music.”

Come Pay a Visit to “Planet Love”!

Let’s start with the basics! Ancient Greek philosophers identified six forms of love: familial love (in Greek, Storge), friendly love or platonic love (Philia), romantic love (Eros), self-love (Philautia), guest love (Xenia) and divine love (Agape).

While not everyone’s love languages are the same, when it comes to showing a little appreciation come February 14, a token of affection is the perfect accompaniment to a romantic love letter, cheesy greeting card, or just some quality time together. And this Valentine’s Day, there’s something silk and special at every price point, whether it’s for your significant other, sister, mother, or friend.

Silk Icons

Dating back as far as 3,000 B.C. China, silk has permeated the fashion world as a delicate finery. Maintaining the popularity of silk, celebrities throughout history have loved fashion silk scarves, and made the stylish accessory their own. From the Chinese emperors who initially popularized them to the actresses of the 1960s who made them iconic, the silk scarf has had a long, elemental relationship with cultures from around the world.

To own a silk scarf, whether it is a purchase from a boutique or a gift handed down from mother to daughter, is a moment of pride for any woman and man of a certain taste and sophistication. It is an investment not just in style, but in innovation, craft, and unbridled joie de vivre.

MANTILITY Silk Scarf: My Chaos” by Leonie Yagdjoglou

As a form of self-expression, the silk scarf quickly came back into fashion; the material allowed for bright patterns and vivid, sharp details to be printed. We all remember Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly wearing scarves in movies or parading their chic silk scarves throughout New York and Monaco.

Silk scarves gained notoriety and soon became a symbol of glamour, power and independence. In the words of Audrey Hepburn below “When I wear a silk scarf I never feel so definitely like a woman, a beautiful woman.”

Check out some celebrities across centuries who have loved silk scarves and worn them very stylish. Let their style and spirit inspire you as you weave scarves into your everyday wardrobe.

Outdoor life/style

“The New Hygge Encourages Going Outdoors Without Compromising Style”

by Madeline Fass @Vogue

After months of lockdown, any time that we can spend outdoors is essential for our sanity. Whether it’s a daily neighbourhood walk in the city or safely escaping to a picturesque cabin upstate for a quiet weekend away, the pandemic has everyone embracing an outdoor lifestyle in any way that they can. And while this may seem like a new way of life for many, especially those of us who are urban-dwellers, to Norwegians, this idea of essential open-air living is not a new concept. In fact, they have a word for it: “friluftsliv” is a concept that literally translates to “free air living” and encourages people to spend time in nature no matter what the weather conditions may be.

It is essentially an extension of the hygge lifestyle, one that, according to Etsy is really catching on in the fashion and lifestyle retail categories, except instead of cozying up indoors, you’re finding comfort and serenity while, say, jogging through the forest, hiking in the mountains, or gardening. In other words, friluftsliv is the new hygge, and therefore it’s time to take the coziest items in your wardrobe from the living room to the great outdoors.

MANTILITY Times #3

There are plenty of health and wellness benefits to spending time in nature and allowing yourself a bit of escape, but it also offers the opportunity for you to outfit yourself in stylish, warm, and joy-sparking outdoor gear.

Prepare to face cold weather and embrace friluftsliv in style. From winter hikes to city strolls and everything in between, here are some ways to dress the part for your next grounding winter adventure.

MANTILITY silk scarves are warmer than you imagine!

Silk is known for its luxurious look and feel. Silk is also a wonderful all-year fibre!

As the weather gets colder, your priorities shift from aesthetics to practicality. In times like these, it often feels like sacrifice is imminent; you can either dress comfortably or dress well. If you’ve ever seen someone wearing a silk scarf, you know they look pretty small and delicate. But if you’ve ever worn one, you know they’re deceptively large. Once you’ve learned silk scarves aren’t as dainty as they appear, you mightn’t be so surprised to learn they’re incredibly warm.

Why? For one thing, all that fabric does a lot for insulation plus, since it’s wrapped around your neck, it’s pretty efficient, too. Its naturally tightly woven fibre helps to shield our skin from cold air, and its low thermal conductivity does not readily transfer our body heat to the environment. With its great temperature regulating qualities, it will keep you at an even keel even as you transition from the warmth of indoors to the cold of outdoors.

MANTILITY Times #2MANTILITY Silk Scarf: Planet Freaksby Anonymous Designer

Further, silk is not only wonderfully soft and comfortable to skin, but also divinely light to wear under thick coat, keeping you warm, comfortable, flexible, and stylish, unlike the woollen scarves, which can be quite itchy, bulky, and irritating to the skin. For decades silk scarves have served as an easy way to spice up a boring outfit.

If you’re looking for a fabric that will help you maintain a comfortable temperature, that’s lightweight enough to adapt to layering for extra warmth, and feels as soft as butter against the skin, silk won’t let you down.

Below are a few examples, adding colour and warmth to a simple wool turtleneck and jeans, a shirt or a winter coat.

Mix & Match Styles

Mix-and-Match Clothing

The trend during the 1950s to wear matching clothing ensembles was followed by women from every social class. After the rationing, or limiting, of fabrics during World War II (1939–45), women embraced the availability of luxuries once again. Their outfits reflected the flood of products on the market. Accessories once limited by the war were available in all price ranges. Women eagerly accented their flowing skirts with an array of hats, gloves, belts, handbags, and shoes. But by the 1950s women’s desire to accessorize began to fade. To combat falling sales, manufacturers advertised a new fashion: mix-and-match clothing.

Matching ensembles became a craze among women in the United States and Europe. Women of the 1950s began obsessively matching the various pieces of their outfits, buying bags, belts, hats, gloves, shoes, costume jewelry, and even nail polish in matching colors. Designers also began creating mix-and-match outfits, enabling women to wear specially designed looks.

In the 1960s women began to foster their own individualized styles and shunned mix-and-match clothing. However, the legacy of mix-and-match clothing lives on in children’s clothing. The Garanimals brand of children’s clothing created in 1972 continues to sell mix-and-match clothing that identifies matching separates with colorful animal tags. Children can choose their own clothing outfits by matching the types of animals on the tags, confident in knowing that a shirt and pair of pants labeled with matching panda tags will look good together.

Some tips from Selene Oliva @Vogue Italia:

“The risk is looking like Harlequin, and it’s not even Carnival time. But combining and mixing patterns and colors is a true art. The right balance can debunk even the strictest rules. Before Yves Saint Laurent pairing black with blue was a true style faux pas. Today it’s a truly chic combination. Considering Italian fashion tradition regarding patterns and textiles and the new mix & match trends, we will give you a few tips on how to combine colors and textures and create a balanced and original look:

Block Colors. Solid, strong hues, like brushstrokes on a white canvas.

Patchy, patches, patchwork. A sartorial technique that assembles together different types of fabrics to create a new visual pattern.

The same pattern, but in different shades of color. It looks like the designers were not sure about what color to choose. The result? Pairing the same pattern in two different tones. An understated and balanced solution if you don’t like excesses.

50/50 (garment). Two faces of the same coin or, better, two fabrics for the same garment. The dress, the pants or the coat are visually divided into two, to wear two patterns simultaneously.

50/50 (look). The outfit visually breaks in two: the striped top is teamed with a printed circle skirt or a lace pencil skirt, a graphic monochrome suit is worn with a watercolor camo print. Use your imagination.”

High and low is the way to go. “It’s become the chic approach to mix it,” says Burke. “It’s a badge of pride for women. They have so much taste, they can pull it off.” A one-shoulder Topshop dress paired with Balenciaga sandals trumps a head-to-toe designer look any day. Recessionistas love to boastfully reveal their thrifty, inventive pairings. Knapp’s go-to outfit is a pair of her husband’s cargo pants, a Mischen silk blouse, Marni stacked heels, and a chunky flea-market necklace. But whichever way style setters put together their mélange of high-low looks, the key is to remain original. “Not wearing the ad-campaign look or the already-worn-by-three-pop-stars outfit is important. Overphotographed, overdistributed, so-extreme-as-to-be-one-season-only looks aren’t current,” says Easley. “In today’s day and age, it’s not modern unless you mix it,” adds Roy. “The style icons we all love — Kate Moss, Sienna Miller — all do it and do it well, proving that it isn’t the dollar amount one puts into an outfit but the amount of style and chicness that comes from within.”
