The Iconostasis by Leonidas Michalakos is leading us into a solemn atmosphere of Byzantine grandeur that imposes silence. It stands emblematic like an open parchment scroll commemorating the heroes that sacrificed themselves in Maniaki.

Papaflessas, Captain Panagiotis Kefalas, Pieros Voidis Mavromichalis, Thanassoulis Kapetanakis, Demetris Poulikakos, martyrs of faith and homeland, are granted by the painter’s hand the greatest honor of sanctification.

In the medallions of a solid gold cross adorned with precious stones, enamel and pearls, the fighters of 1821 take the place of the Saints. A powerful symbolic image that renews its shape, form and meaning from the folk versification of a mourning woman of Mani. An imposing cross that rises under the Dextera Domini and above the laudatory lamentation of an entire people.
